This selection from Ismat Chughtai’s prose writing comprises autobiographical essays, literary criticism and pen portraits of her well-known contemporaries. Translated into English for the very first time, this collection is an important contribution to the social fabric of her life and times.  
ISMAT CHUGHTAI
was born on 15 August, 1915 into a middle class family in Badayun. Her first short story Lihaaf published in 1942 created a storm of controversy. One of Urdu’s boldest and outspoken women writers, she played an important role in the development of the modern Urdu short story. She wrote novels, novellas, plays and essays and with her husband Shahid Latif, produced and co-directed several films. She was an actively involved with the Progressive Writers’ Association and had close friendships with major writers of the day.
