Bangladeshi
writer Taslima Nasrin’s first major work in
exile, My Girlhood (Amar
Meyibela) is a sensitive retelling of her growing
up as part of an extended family in Bangladesh and
erstwhile East Pakistan. A child-like innocence
and freshness pervades her sharp observations of
Bangladeshi society with its class discriminations
and bias, its blatant gender disparities and growing
religious orthodoxy and intolerance.

TASLIMA
NASRIN
has been writing
both poetry and prose. After the publication
of her novel Lajja
(Shame) in 1993, she was forced to leave Bangladesh
and seek refuge in Europe, where she has continued
to live. She was awarded the Ananda Puraskar
in India in 1992 and again in 2000. |

GOPA
MAJUMDAR
has been translating
Bengali fiction into English for over a decade.
She has translated the works of several well-known
writers like Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay,
Ashapurna Devi, Nabaneeta Dev Sen and Satyajit
Ray. |
